About us
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Ohio State continues a long and distinguished tradition that makes it one of the premier comprehensive graduate programs in the country. The Department offers integrated MA/PhD programs in Hispanic Linguistics, Iberian Studies, Latin American Cultural and Literary Studies, and Literatures and Cultures of the Portuguese-Speaking World. All applicants apply directly to the PhD program; applicants without a prior MA in the field may earn one on the way to the PhD.
We also offer minors in film studies, Latino studies, literary and cultural theory, folklore, and other exciting fields, reflecting the interdisciplinary approach to research of our faculty and students. Our faculty members and graduate students pursue a great variety of research interests within these fields.
Faculty members maintain active research programs and are, at the same time, committed to excellence in instruction, as attested by numerous teaching awards won in recent years. Similarly, our students are recognized for:
- their teaching
- invited to present their work at conferences
- awarded FLAS and Fulbright-Hayes fellowships
- awarded internal and external grants to conduct research
